An example of this came in the movie “The Lost World” when Peter Ludlow surrounded by smaller dinosaurs talks about John Hammond before embarking in “The spared no expense” train of Isla Nublar, the original plan was to locate Jurassic Park in San Diego, with a much smaller budget and a facility capable to scale and grow was abandoned In lieu of a larger resort which at one point included rollercoasters, river expeditions, luxury and the ford explorers which ended up crumbling.
Although the Vision of Peter Ludlow was also ultimately flawed and dangerous, provides us with a better insight onto our little demons when creating our own projects.
When starting your own project start with the main simple questions:
- What it is your objective and why you want to do it?
Setting your main objective and what is your motivation behind it would serve as a control point to avoid dreaming outside the boundaries you have marked. - How I can achieve this goal?
You are looking onto your own skills, your strengths and also evaluate your weaknesses too, see what skills you might need to either develop or source from potential team mates (Remember, sometimes is ok to ask for help). - What is the scope of it?
It is easy to go on the “rose googles” and envision a higher goal and vision than the one that you are looking to achieve. Remember to go through different milestones, develop goals as you progress until you can work on the whole masterplan. - Can you scale it up in the future?
It could be very idyllic to think on the bigger masterplan and think we can achieve it on day one, however you must look onto the first set of goals, achieve them, and based on results, we can aim for newer goals and make your project grow. - Budget
Unfortunately, when we talk about raising our own projects, we will have also the factor of the budget to be taken into consideration too. This could stop the project in the rails if we are not careful.
Can I achieve all the things I have in my Objective with the Budget I have?
Is there any way I could achieve the same goal with a minor expense?
Is there any way I can offset part of the costs.
In overall, it is cool to want to start a project but remember that always is good to take a look back, change your creative hats and do a little bit of self-evaluation so you will not be “Trapped and flying in the never-ending BLUE SKY” unable to take off as your project and ending frustrated when things might not take off as you took to might of a take off weight from the get go.
